McDonalds Calories & Nutrition

It’s hard to believe that the largest chain of quick service restaurants in the world (not just in America) has been in the UK for over 40 years. And yet, it’s true. With almost 1200 location nationwide, with the company looking to establish 400 more, there is bound to be a McDonald’s near you. That being said, when thinking about a quick but nutritional meal for yourself, McDonald’s is probably not the first restaurant that comes to mind. However, responding to consumer concerns, the fast-food giant has made a major change in their menu choices, offering choices with better nutrition.

Patrons visiting the company website will find McDonald’s nutritional information listed alongside the menu choices. Simply hovering the curser above the food item will show all the nutritional facts. In addition, McDonald’s UK has an “Understanding Nutrition” page that explains the GDR’s (Guideline Daily Amounts) and describes the elements of a balanced diet. The Nutrition Calculator page offers the ability to calculate the nutritional value (including calories) of every single menu item, and even shows allergen information. These pro-active, health conscious options really set McDonald’s apart in the quick-service industry.

One particularly encouraging aspect of McDonald’s attention to healthy eating is their “Deli Choices” line. This selection of wholesome lunchtime foods includes a Spicy Veggie Wrap (520 calories and only 2 grams of fat) and the Grilled Chicken Salad Wrap (432 calories, only two grams of fat). The Grilled Chicken & Bacon Salad is a delicious entrée with 20 grams of protein but only 140 calories and 3 grams of fat. Choose that, and could still treat yourself to a small McDonald’s fries and not feel guilty.

Of course, McDonald’s still serves those super-delicious, mega-bad-for-you favourites like Big Tasty with Bacon (890 calories, 55 grams of fat) or the original Big Tasty (835 calories, and 51 grams fat). But do you really want those McFries to be permanently on your thighs? If not, visit the website before you visit the drive thru. You can still have your McYmmies, but you can make healthier, more nutritional choices.
